Commentary

Musiibatun – (calamity, woe, trouble), its literal meanings are misery, distress, accident, chance. Once the Messenger of Allah Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) commanded that which thing a Muslim feels un-pleasant that is the musiibat for him. So it is known that this word has many vast and common meanings.

We have studied in the verse before it that the Muslims will be tested by God Almighty through different manners of difficulties, calamities, and troubles from time to time, the person who will keep perseverance and steadfastness; he will succeed easily in these tests. So the future consequence of the steadfast will be better. The token of the patient has been mentioned in the today’s verse that the people, who say at the time of musiibat (any difficulty) “Lo! We are Allah’s and lo! Unto Him we are returning”, they are included in the steadfast.

We have learnt three things in this verse:

1.   We all and everything of ours is the property of God Almighty. Nothing is our own including ourselves (as we claim that), our entire things, wives, children, wealth, property, native country, dynasty, body and soul. It is the cause of grief, sorrow, pain and desire of the human being that he supposes that his beloved things are his own. When this thought will be expelled from the mind and it will be considered that God Almighty is the Master, Possessor and Owner of everything, then there will be no scope for sorrow, sadness and displeasure. We have to repeat these words in every hard, difficult, trouble and calamity, “Ours is nothing here. Everything is of God Almighty and has to return towards Him”.

2.   Whether the sorrows, troubles, pains and difficulties are too much heavy, all are temporary, mortal, transitory, coming and going. These entire will end and soon; we would have to attend the Court of Real Master Almighty, so why should we be afraid of them?

3.   These calamities and tests are not useless by chance. Their remuneration and reward shall be granted during the next life i.e. on the Day of Resurrection. The individual, who bore them with steadfastness, remained standing on the Just and did not give up the real cause, he shall be rewarded due to his fortitude.

A person, how much will have strong faith in these fidelity, so much he will remain in contentment and quiet. We should bear in our minds these things properly, so that it may become stamped on our hearts. Although the relation of steadfastness is with the heart but due to saying these words with tongue, the tongue becomes companion of the heart and the person gets power and strength from it. It has been mentioned about the Messenger of God Almighty (glory, grace, blessings and peace be upon Him) that He used to recite “‘Innaa  Lillaahi  wa  ‘innaaa ‘ilayHi  raaji-‘uun” (Lo! We are Allah’s and lo! Unto Him we are returning) in even any most light difficulty, trouble or un-pleasant situation.
