Expedition for the Holy Land

Surah ‘Al-Baqarah (The Cow) – Chapter – 2)

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

218.  Lo! Those who believe, and those who emigrate (to escape the persecution) and strive in the Way of Allah, these have hope of Allah’s Mercy. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
218.  ‘Innallaziina  ‘aamanuu  wallaziina  haajaruu  wa  jaa-haduu  fii SabiiLillaahi,  ‘ulaa-‘ika  yarjuuna  RahmatAllaah.  Wallaahu  Gafuurur-Rahiim.

Commentary

‘Allaziina  haajaruu – (those who emigrated) it signifies toward those people who left their native land, which is dearest and beloved for every living creature, for the cause of religion. They left the town of infidelity and went to the town of Belief. Messenger of God Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and His Companions (Sahaabah) (may God be pleased with them) emigrated from Makkah to Madinah.

Jaa-haduu – (who strive) this word has been derived from Jihad, which means strong endeavor and hard struggle. All types of miseries and difficulties are included in it and the greatest difficulty is warfare and slaying.

Fii SabiiLillaahi – (in the Way of God) by imposing restriction of Emigration and Strive with Fii SabiiLillaahi  it has been proved that Muslims do not emigrate or strive for their any personal want or advantage. They bear all kinds of calamities and difficulties only for the pleasure of God Almighty.

Yarjuuna – (they have hope) purpose of this word is to produce happy news to those Believers who had killed an Infidel unknowingly during the sacred month.

Those Companions (may God be pleased with them) who killed an Infidel unknowingly during the sacred month, knew that they had not committed any sin, but they were some thoughtful in this matter because they did not know about reward of this strife while they wished the future reward of this virtue. On this occasion this verse was revealed that “Those who believe, and those who emigrate (to escape the persecution) and strive in the Way of Allah”, without any doubt “they are hopeful of Allah’s Mercy” and they are rightful of the reward and remuneration. God Almighty is Forgiving mistakes of His servants and He is Merciful upon them. He will never forfeit the rights of His worshiper slaves.

It appears also from this verse that Infidels and Idolaters will try their best to return the Muslims from their religion, they will tyrannize and expel them from their native land, they will fight against them, but the Muslims should not be discouraged, they should remain established in their Belief. If Infidels expel Muslims from their country, they should fight in the encounter strongly with them and remain steadfast.

In short, only those people deserve the Mercy, Kindness and Forgiveness of Allah Almighty who believed. If they suffered the calamities, even that they left their birth-place, even then the enemies of Islam did not let them remain in peace; then they decided to strive but did not become careless from the religion.
